Rob and I were married in August 2000. We were so much in love and so excited about our future. We often talked about the family we would have, the children that would come into our little family. After a couple years of being married we felt that the time had come to start our family. After many unsuccessful tries we turned to the advice of doctors. We saw doctor after doctor and after trying different fertility tests and procedures without success we looked into adoption.
Adoption has been something that both Rob and I have been familiar with within our extended families. We both have cousins who have been able to adopt and so we have both been able to see what a blessing and miracle adoption is to a family. We prayed about adoption, and both Rob and I felt strongly that adoption was the avenue through which we have our family.
We started our adoption paperwork while living in Utah, before we were finally approved we had moved to Michigan for schooling. We were finalized for adoption while living in Michigan. We had a lot of lonely days, days of pain and despair. Many of our friends and family members were starting to have children of their own. The pain of unable to have children would come and go (good days and bad). Both Rob and I struggled with the loss of being unable to have children like so many of our friends, and our family members were able to. Many tearful prayers were said.
We moved from Michigan to Kentucky and continued to wait for adoption to bless our lives. In July 2007 we got an email from a birth mom that would change our lives forever. She was 3 months pregnant and was thinking about adoption. We emailed back and forth for weeks and we so excited with she told us that she had decided that she would like to have us adopt her baby. Words could not be expressed as to how excited and blessed we felt. We continued to email and get to know more about each other. We planned a weekend to drive to Tennessee to meet her. I remember feeling like the situation was so surreal and I remember feeling so nervous. When we met it was so comfortable and my nervous feelings went away. We had a wonderful time meeting this sweet birth mom.
In February 2008 (after 6 years of waiting) our prayers of adoption were answered. We held for the first time our beautiful daughter Karlee. She was perfect, and our special miracle. Karlee's birth mom showed us so much strength and unconditional love. We have loved being parents, to be able to share so much love with Karlee. There is not a day that goes by that we are not grateful for the blessing of adoption in our lives. Karlee has blessed Rob and I's life in so many ways. Karlee is loved by her grandparents, aunts and uncles, and her cousins.
Karlee is very anxious for us to be able to adopt again, to be able to add to our small, yet very special family. She is excited and tells us that she can't wait to share her toys with a little brother or sister. Karlee will be the BEST big sister, she has so much love to give. We are excited to share our traditions, build memories as a family.
Thank you for taking the time to read about Our Journey to Adoption. Everyone's story is different and special in their own way. We pray that by reading our journey you will be able to get to know us a little bit better.☺
Much love,
Rob and Heather
